"Israeli activists stand in solidarity with the Great March of Return" (Haim Schwarczenberg, video, Sept 21):

On the 21st September around 50 Israeli activists went to Malaka located right next to the Gaza border to demonstrate in solidarity with the Palestinians participating in the Great March of Return.

"Israel, Human Rights Watch, and the Nation State Law"  (Jadaliyyah, Aug 14, video & transcript):

Bassam Haddad spoke with Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine Director at Human Rights Watch, about Israel's deportation order against him and the challenge Human Rights Watch mounted in Israeli courts to this decision and the draconian law it is based on.

Gaza's "Incremental Genocide":

"One Protester Killed and 286 Injured at Friday Demonstrations in Gaza" (Al-Mezan, p.r. Sept 21, 8h pm):

One Palestinian protester was killed and about 286 were injured by the Israeli military during the Great Return March demonstrations on Friday, 21 Sept in the Gaza Strip. Among those injured were 53 children, two women, and one paramedic. 85 of the injured were shot with live fire, including 37 children and women.

"Israëlische leger doodt twee Palestijnse tieners" (The Rights Forum, 9 sept):

Analysis & Comments:

Avi Shlaim, "Palestinians still live under apartheid in Israel, 25 years after the Oslo accord" (The Guardian, Sept 13):

Benjamin Netanyahu remains determined to create a nation-state for Jews, rather than a Jewish democratic state, says international relations professor Avi Shlaim.

Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man, "The moment of truth for EU policy on Israel-Palestine" (+972, Sept 5):

Whether European states follow through on their threats and warnings over the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar will determine a great deal about the EU's relevance and its ability to influence Israeli policy vis-a-vis the Palestinians. European powers are going to have to make a crucial choice in the coming week.

Ramzy Baroud, "Why Israel Demolishes: Khan Al-Ahmar as Representation of Greater Genocide" (The Palestine Chronicle, Sept 19):

Israel demolishes, destroys and pulverizes because, in the racist mindset of Israeli rulers, there can be no room between the Sea and the River but for Jews; where the Palestinians - oppressed, colonized and dehumanized - don't factor in the least in Israel's ruthless calculations. ...Like vultures, Israeli soldiers descended on Khan Al-Ahmar, on Sep. 14, recreating a menacing scene with which the residents of this small Palestinian village, located East of Jerusalem, are all-too-familiar.

Ali Abunimah & Asa Wistanley, "Censored film reveals The Israel Project's secret Facebook campaign" (EI, 13 Sept):

The Israel Project, a major advocacy group based in Washington, is running a secret influence campaign on Facebook. This is revealed in The Lobby - USA , an undercover Al Jazeera documentary that has never been broadcast due to censorship by Qatar following pressure from pro-Israel organizations.

Freddy De Pauw, "Plan Trump-Kushner-Netanyahu in werking" (Uitpers, 11 sept):

MO* interviewde hierover Israëlisch parlementslid Aida Touma.

"Opsteller IHRA-definitie van antisemitisme waarschuwt tegen invoering ervan" (The Rights Forum, 12/9):

Jonathan Ofir, "When an Israeli settler is killed, everyone notices" (Mondoweiss, Sept 21):

Israeli hasbarists are exploiting the death of settler Ari Fuld for propaganda value as they admonish people for being insensitive, or even complicit, if they do not mourn. At the same time, it is forbidden to note that Palestinians are systematically being dehumanized to death by the very ideology that Ari Fuld was championing and is being openly remembered for.

Arts, Culture & Education:

"Israeli Arab poet Dareen Tatour, convicted of incitement, released from prison" (Haaretz, Sept 20):

Israeli Arab poet Dareen Tatour was released from prison on Thursday after serving a sentence for incitement to violence and supporting terrorist organizations in social media posts. "I am very happy to have freedom at least after three years in prison, remand, house arrest with an electronic cuff and again house arrest," Tatour told reporters.

"Refusing the Separation: An Interview with Palestinian Filmmaker Annemarie Jacir" (Isis Nusair, Jadaliyya, Sept 6):

This interview was conducted with Annemarie Jacir following the release of her recent film Wajib (2017)....: "Your film Like Twenty Impossibles (2003) deals with the Israeli occupation. What presence does the Israeli occupation have in your films, and how does it shape the relation to Palestine?"

Boycott:

"Lana Del Rey's Israeli Concert Cancellation Inflames Boycott Fears" (The Hollywood Reporter, Sept 11):

When Lana Del Rey revealed in mid-August that she was set to perform at the inaugural Meteor Festival in Israel, the singer was no doubt aware of what might follow: sustained pressure from activists who are urging high-profile artists not to play in the country over protest of its treatment of the Palestinian people.

"For artists, playing the 'escapist' Meteor festival in an Israeli kibbutz is like playing Sun City" (Jonathan Ofir, Mondoweiss, Sept 11):

Frank Sinatra got $2 million in 1981 to defy boycott calls and play South African apartheid venue Sun City. Lana Del Rey just heeded boycott calls, giving up a $700,000 appearance fee, nearly 10 times her usual reported fee, and canceled Israel's escapist Meteor festival. See the parallel?

"Palestine steps up efforts against Eurovision 2019 in Israel" (Ahmad Abu Amer, al-Monitor, Sept 19):

GAZA CITY - As pro-Palestinian advocates stepped up their requests for a boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 scheduled to take place in Israel, Palestinian Minister of Culture Ehab Bseiso called on all cultural promoters in Europe and elsewhere to use culture as "a tool for justice, not oppression."

Matthias Van der Heyden, "Boycot het Eurovisiesongfestival in Israël" (MO*, 14 sept):

De Israëlische Netta won in 2018 het Eurovisiesongfestival. "Volgend jaar vieren we samen diversiteit in Jeruzalem!" zei ze trots. Hoezo?

"Quotes from Signatories of Boycott Eurovision 2019 Artists' Letter" (BDS, Sept 7):

Quotes from signatories of the Boycott Eurovision 2019 artists' letter published in The Guardian: "My job has long been to write about news. If I write about the proven and ongoing collusion between the US, Australia and those Israeli forces occupying Palestine, I do it only in small, independent media.

Jonathan Ofir, "Free at last, Israeli actor Itay Tiran endorses BDS and says Zionism is racism" (Mondoweiss, Sept 8):

I was really taken by Itay Tiran's acting in the gripping British mini-saeries ' The Promise ' directed by Peter Kosminsky. The series is about Israel-Palestine, jumping back and forth between pre-state years and current events. Tiran was playing a Jewish-Israeli leftist who joined Combatants for Peace, and his sister considers him an anti-Zionist.

Current Affairs:

"PCHR Calls for Investigation into Death Circumstances of Young Man only Few Hours after Being Arrested by Israeli Forces" (Palestinian Center for Human Rights, pr, Sept 18):

Israeli soldiers sneaked into a West Bank village, abducted a 24-year-old, beat him brutally, took him into custody, and a few hours later he was dead. Israeli authorities have not delivered his body to his family or to Palestinian authorities. This type of thing has happened before...

Amnesty International: "Six Palestinians killed within 24 hours, some deaths may involve war crimes" (19/9):

The deaths of 6 within just 24 hours is a horrific demonstration of the unnecessary or excessive force deployed by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians in the OPT .... Between 10pm on Monday 17 Sept and 8pm on Tuesday 18 Sept, Israeli forces killed 4 Palestinian men in the Gaza Strip using live ammunition. Within the same period, 2 more died as a result of the actions of Israeli forces in the West Bank, one after being beaten during the process of arrest and another shot dead in a busy street in East Jerusalem.

"Israel's prison excursion: A journey of unspeakable misery" (Salam Abu Sharar, MEE, Aug 24):

The misery begins when a prison officer briskly announces that one of the jailed women will be going on an "excursion". From that moment onwards, all are wrought with worry. This "excursion" is not a touristic expedition or a pleasant stroll, but a journey of relentless anguish and fatigue.

"Israeli Racism - Legalized and Running Rampant" (Zuhair Andraus, IAK, Aug 31):

Israel's new Nation State Law, just over 1 month old, has emboldened right-wing Israelis and removed all protection from Palestinians living in Israel. Laws forbid them from growing or selling certain crops, picking certain herbs, and applying for many jobs; besides this, many factories are closing or moving to Jordan.

"Israeli soldiers harass Palestinian women, steal their property at military checkpoint" (IMEMC, Sept 22):

Two soldiers have been charged with sexually harassing women at the Qalandiya checkpoint near Ramallah and stealing their property. According to Israeli sources, the soldiers forced women to undress and be subjected to strip searches, touched them inappropriately, and stole money and property from both women and men passing through the checkpoint.

On the fortieth anniversary of the Camp David Accords, a groundbreaking new history that shows how Egyptian-Israeli peace ensured lasting Palestinian statelessness. For 70 years Israel has existed as a state, and for 40 years it has honored a peace treaty with Egypt that is widely viewed as a triumph of U.S.

# Ghada Ageel (ed.), "Apartheid in Palestine: Hard Laws and Harder Experiences",  Richard A. Falk (Foreword), Yasmeen Abu-Laban (Contributor), Ramzy Baroud (Contributor), a.o. Pb, Univ of Alberta Press, 304p., ISBN: 9781772120820; $31.28 (amazon).

"Of all the crimes to which Palestinians have been subjected through a century of bitter tragedy, perhaps none are more cruel than the silencing of their voices. The suffering has been most extreme, criminal and grotesque, in Gaza, where Ghada Ageel was one of the victims from childhood. This collection of essays is a poignant cry for justice, far too long delayed." - Noam Chomsky.
