Actions & Calls:

# BACBI, Pr, Feb 24, 2020: « We Are Ashamed to Be Belgian » (bacbi.pdf):
"Under heavy Israeli pressure in Jerusalem and Brussels, the Belgian Representation in the Security Council, which currently holds the presidency of the Council, recently decided to withdraw an invitation to the well-known Palestinian NGO
'Defense for Children International Palestine' for a briefing on the Middle East at the Council's February 24 session. As Belgian academics, artists and cultural workers, we are ashamed of this cowardly and irresponsible behaviour by our country...".

Belgium caved into Israeli pressure to disinvite me from the Security Council. In doing so, they helped undermine human rights work for Palestinian children," by Brad Parker (+972).

Analyses & Comments:

Oren Ziv, "(Bassem Tamimi:) 'We gave up on historic Palestine in exchange for nothing'" (+972, Feb 19):

"We need to wake up and change our strategy, to unite our struggle," says Bassem Tamimi, a veteran Palestinian activist and father of Ahed Tamimi, as he sits in his Nabi Saleh home in the occupied West Bank. Tamimi, who was born in 1967 and has only ever known military occupation, was jailed during the First Intifada and has been among the leaders of the village's popular protests over the past decade. Now, however, he has given up on the two-state solution. "It's no longer an option," he says.

Arts, Culture & Heritage:

Aziza Nofal, "Palestinian architect turns conservation of heritage into resistance" (Al-Monitor, Feb 13):

For nearly four decades, Palestinian architect Nadia Habash has sought to preserve her country's architectural heritage through eco-friendly renovations and rehabilitation of traditional buildings that serve the needs of the day. "Palestinian architecture, an integral part of our cultural heritage and national identity, is subjected to systematic destruction by the Israeli occupation, which aims to eliminate evidence of the existence of our ancestors on this land," wrote the award-winning architect in her article  "Architecture as Resistance."

The French-Algerian artist Zineb Sedira says she will not stand down as the representative of France at the 2021 Venice Biennale after being caught up in an ongoing row over her support for Palestine. The latest development comes after Isart, a group that promotes cultural exchange between France and Israel, called on the French culture minister, Franck Riester, to "renounce" Sedira's appointment.

Selma Dabbagh, "Mending the holes in collective memory" (The Electronic Intifada, 20 Jan):

When the past has been subjected to a systematic process of erasure, how can artists, writers, historians, politicians, educators and activists on Palestine address it? With villages destroyed, libraries and documentation centers looted and archives appropriated by Israeli forces, reclaiming history has become a mission and a mantra for Palestinian intellectuals and activists.

International:

David Cronin, "Why is Belgium being cruel to Gaza's refugees?" (The Electronic Intifada, 6 Feb):

By a variety of measures, the situation in Gaza is getting worse. Poverty and unemployment are rising, stocks of vital medicines are falling, electricity is in short supply. Belgium must be one of the few countries in the world to suggest that matters are improving... In total, the Belgian authorities took 783 decisions on requests for refugee status by Palestinians last year. Some 610 were turned down, with 172 approved (one Palestinian was given a protected status less than that of someone recognized as a refugee). The revised policy is causing huge anxiety.

Plan Trump:

Avi Shlaim, "Palestine and the West: A century of betrayal" (Middle East Eye, Feb 17):

Noam Chomsky described settler-colonialism as the most extreme and sadistic form of imperialism. The Palestinian people have suffered the unique misfortune of being at the receiving end of both Zionist settler-colonialism and western imperialism for the last century... US President Donald Trump neatly fits into this old colonial pattern of advancing Zionist interests at the expense of Palestinians. In his simplistic worldview, there are only winners and losers - and to him, Israelis are winners while Palestinians are perennial losers. He has thus abandoned any pretence to even-handedness or serving as an honest broker.

"We've taken an unconventional approach," Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and the architect of the recently released U.S. Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, boasted of his work (YouTube). But the Trump plan is actually as traditional as it gets. In fact, it bears striking resemblance to another plan published more than 40 years ago. @ Palestine Legal: 2019 Year-in-Review: Movement for Palestinian Rights Thrives Despite Censorship" (pdf, 28p.):

In December 2019, Donald Trump signed an executive order directing government agencies to consider a distorted definition of antisemitism designed to censor human rights activists. This move capped off a year of heightened efforts by government officials, school administrators, and Israel proxy groups to silence the growing chorus of Americans demanding freedom, justice and equality for Palestinians.

Palestinian prisoners, misrepresented through statistics, news reports, exploitation and glorification, tell slivers of their stories in this collection of first-hand narratives that stand as a testimony for both Palestinian resistance and resilience. Khalida Jarrar is a member of the PFLP and the Palestine Legislative Council; she is also a freed prisoner (but was re-arrested in Oct 2019), and sums up the book thus in her foreword: "Each individual narrative is also a defining moment, a conflict between the will of the prison guard and all that he represents, and the will of the prisoners and what they represent as a collective, capable, when united, of overcoming incredible odds."

Any American who has asked their representative or senator a question related to Palestinian rights knows that it only seems to auto-generate the following response: "I support the two-state solution." In this slim new book, Lustick cites three obstacles that inadvertently helped guarantee the demise of the two-state solution, devoting a chapter to each. His concluding chapter, titled "One-State Reality and Its Future," outlines strategies for a rights-based approach to secure equality and freedom for all - Israeli Jews, non-Jewish immigrants and Palestinians.
