Rana Ramlawi, a 23-year-old Palestinian young woman from the Gaza Strip, resorts to sand art to highlight the Palestinian cause and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In her sculptures made out of sand and water, many messages are conveyed in support of the Palestinian cause, since she believes art is an important way to emphasize the rights and demand for freedom and ending the Israeli occupation. "One of my goals in my works is to keep this heritage and say that our identity, which Israel is trying to eradicate, is still there," she said (XinhuaNet, Jan 28, 2020).

Analyses & Comments:

G.N.Nithya, "Between the rock of the occupation, and the hammer of coronavirus" (The Bullet, April 19):

The Coronavirus and the Conditions of Palestinian Workers.
This past month Israeli soldiers dumped a Palestinian worker at a checkpoint on the border of the West Bank, shivering from fever and barely able to breathe. According to Middle East Eye, he "had been showing signs of the coronavirus over the past four days, and was recently tested for the virus. But before the man, allegedly a resident of Nablus, could receive his test results, his Israeli employer reportedly called the authorities, who picked him up and dropped him on the other side of the Beit Sira checkpoint, which connects central Israel and the occupied West Bank." "It's like we are slaves to them," says a local Palestinian, "They use us when they need us, and when they are finished, they throw us away like trash."

For this reason, they visited Israel and Palestine, where they had the possibility to meet with senior officers from NGOs protecting the fundamental rights of Palestinian prisoners.

Ramzy Baroud & Romana Rubeo: "Will the Coronavirus Change the World? On Gramsci's 'Interregnum' and Zizek's Ethnocentric Philosophy" (The Palestine Chronicle, April 24):

The prophecies are here and it is a foregone conclusion: the post-coronavirus world will look fundamentally different from anything that we have seen or experienced, at least since the end of World War II. Even before the 'curve flattened' in many countries that have experienced high death tolls - let alone economic devastation - as a result of the unhindered spread of the COVID-19 disease, thinkers and philosophers began speculating, from the comfort of their own quarantines, about the many scenarios that await us. Without a people-propelled form of change, the status quo seems to constantly reinvent itself, restoring its dominance, cultural hegemony and undemocratic claim to power.

Arts, Culture & Heritage:

Majed Abusalama,"From Fauda to the Messiah: The "Us-Them" Narrative - A Netflix Disorder" (Jadaliyyah, April 2):

After reading about the demonization of Palestinians in the Messiah series online, Facebook ads for the Fauda series began popping up on my feed. I have enough Fauda in my life, I thought. Still, I decided to watch the first season of "Fauda" (the Arabic word for chaos), an Israeli television series about Palestine/Israel. The show's writers were members of the Mista'arvim Occupation Unit - soldiers who disguise themselves as Arabs - and based this show on the war crimes committed by those squadrons against Palestinians. How does that feel to the average Palestinian viewer?

Corona in oPt:

"COVID-19 Emergency Situation Report 6 (21 - 28 April 2020)" (OCHA, April 28):

An additional 46 Palestinians were confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 in the oPt during the reporting period, including 33 in East Jerusalem, 11 in the reminder of the West Bank and two in the Gaza Strip, with no new deaths recorded. This brings to 495, the total number of cases across the oPt as of 28 April, of whom four have died and at least 95 have recovered. The relatively large increase in caseload in East Jerusalem is attributed to the increase in the volume of samples tested, following the Israeli authorities' establishment of new testing facilities in the Palestinian areas of the city over the past two weeks (currently 10 facilities). According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH), since the onset of the pandemic, nearly 28,000 laboratory samples have been tested and approximately 13,000 Palestinians are in quarantine at home, or in designated facilities for monitoring purposes.

Fact Sheet: "Coronavirus under Israeli Apartheid" (Palestinian BDS National Committee, April 20):

Palestinians, targeted by Israel's #CoronaRacism, are highly vulnerable to coronavirus due to decades of Israeli oppression. Israel's settler-colonial regime has systematically devastated our healthcare systems, rendering us more susceptible to pandemics. After 13 years of Israeli siege, Gaza has only 63 ventilators and 78 ICU beds for two million residents.

Spitting at someone is a universal insult. In Israel, however, spitting at Palestinians is an entirely different story. "Coronavirus crisis presents new opportunities for Gaza battered economy" (Ass.Press, April 25):

For the first time in years, sewing factories in the Gaza Strip are back to working at full capacity - producing masks, gloves and protective gowns, some of which are bound for Israel. It's a rare economic lifeline in the coastal territory, which has been blockaded by Israel and Egypt since the Hamas militant group seized power from rival Palestinian forces in the Strip in 2007. But the sudden opportunity also shows how Gaza's economy is at the mercy of those enforcing the blockade - and how depressed wages have become. Workers earn as little as $8 a day.

In May last year, the German Bundestag passed a resolution condemning BDS as "anti-Semitic", flatly conflating "Israel" with "Jews", thus associating BDS with the Nazi boycott of Jews.
