  • Ronit LENTIN, "Traces of Racial Exception. Racializing Israeli Settler Colonialism" Bloomsbury, 2019, 224p., pb; online price: £20.29: click here!
Positioning race front and centre, this book theorizes that political violence, in the form of a socio-political process that differentiates between human and less-than-human populations, is used by the state of Israel in racializing and ruling the citizens of occupied Palestine. Lentin argues that Israel's rule over Palestine is an example of Agamben's state of exception, Goldberg's racial state and Wolfe's settler colony; the Israeli racial settler colony employs its laws to rule besieged Palestine, while excluding itself and its Jewish citizen-colonists from legal instruments and governmental technologies. Governing through emergency legislation and through practices of exception, emergency, necessity and security, Israel positions itself outside domestic and international law.
  • Yair WALLACH: "The Racial Logic of Palestine’s Partition” (Ethnic and Racial Studies, Dec 9, 2022, pdf, 23pp.): click here!
Abstract. The partition of Palestine wasfirst proposed more than eight decades ago. Itremains a consensus international approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Why was Palestine the only settler-colonial context outside Europe in whichpartition became a dominant“solution”? This article argues that theexplanation is found in European racial attitudes towards Jews and Arabs inthefirst half of the twentieth century. British and international policy makersregarded (European) Jews as a non-European, Semitic race. This led them toview Jewish Zionist migrants and native Palestinian Arabs as somewhatcomparable groups. Rather than a clash between European settlers and Arabnatives, they saw in Palestine a conflict between two nations living side byside.

In full: The Political Quarterly, Vol. 93, No. 3, July/September 2022, pp. 508-516, click here!  In pdf: click here!
Abstract: Since the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police, more attention is being paid to anti-black racism and anti-racism. The authors contend that, by extension, other forms of racism need to be considered more closely, including those that have received limited scholarlyand public attention. This article isolates key elements of anti-Palestinian racism as a specific form of racism that operates at local and global levels. As an Arab group which includes both Christians and Muslims, Palestinians can experience anti-Muslim racism (or Islamophobia) along with being subjected to anti-Arab racism and Orientalist stereotypes. Using the concept of racial gaslighting which has been advanced recently across a number of disciplines, the authors isolate an identifiable anti-Palestinian racism, arguing that anti-Palestinian racism is expressed through racial gaslighting in a threefold manner. The first is denial, with a key example being the treatment of the 1948 Nakba (or catastrophe). The second is how racial gaslighting operates through power inequities, with stateless Palestinians, occupied Palestinians and Palestinians holding Israeli citizenship having clear inequities, distorted by an active repositioning of the apartheid and settler-colonial character of the Israeli state as one that is ‘democratic’, ‘Jewish’, and unfairly treated. Finally, the article considers how Palestinians are victim-blamed, by discourses which present them as ‘terrorist’, ‘anti-semitic’, and ‘undemocratic’.

Palestine activism has faced an aggressive crackdown across Europe in recent months, particularly in Germany and the United Kingdom. This has included the censorship of Palestinian and Arab voices in German media for their views on Israel, the banning of protests in Berlin hoisting the Palestinian flag or keffiyeh, and draconian anti-Palestinian legislation dressed up as measures to combat antisemitism — all while Israel escalates its persecution of human rights groups in Palestine itself.

Criminalising Palestinians for speaking up for Palestinian rights, while neo-Nazis are allowed to raise their fascist slogans in public, is Germany’s moral failure.
