  • "Saudi crown prince ‘upset’ with Netanyahu" (Middle East Monitor, Sept 20, 2023): click here!
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman is said to be “upset” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Channel 12 TV reported on Tuesday. This is believed to be the reason why normalisation talks have apparently been put on hold. Citing senior Saudi officials, the report claimed that Riyadh will not accept normalisation of ties with Israel without the creation of an independent Palestinian state. The officials stressed that Saudi Arabia will not sign an unconditional normalisation deal, pointing out that Netanyahu is not ready to make any concessions to the Palestinians. According to Channel 12, the Saudi officials added that the Kingdom “is not interested to talk with the current extremist Israeli government.”

The latest Arab Opinion Index 2022 is yet more proof that Arab societies are diverse in every possible way, from their assessment of their economic situation and living conditions to their take on immigration, state institutions and democracy. With one single exception: Palestine. 76 per cent of all respondents to the poll, which is carried out annually by the Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies in Doha, said that Palestine is a cause for all Arabs, not Palestinians alone.

Ibrahim Mansour had spent six months looking for work. He went to every coffee shop in Nahr al-Bared refugee camp and the nearby Lebanese city of Tripoli asking for jobs. It was all to no avail. “I am almost 30 and I still don’t have a regular job,” he said. The only work he has found in recent years has been as a laborer on projects to rebuild parts of Nahr al-Bared that were destroyed back in 2007. Deeply frustrated, Mansour decided to emigrate. With the hope of reaching Europe, he set out on a voyage from Tripoli last month. The voyage proved disastrous. Overcrowded, the boat sank off the coast of Tartous, a port in Syria. Almost 100 people drowned. Of them at least two dozen were Palestinians.

Si la Palestine semble avoir disparu de l’ordre du jour diplomatique occidental et arabe, elle demeure ancrée dans la réalité régionale et dans la mémoire des peuples. On ne peut pas si facilement éradiquer l’aspiration à l’émancipation.
  • Ramzy BAROUD: « Despite Abraham Accords, Palestine is a deeply rooted emotional, cultural and spiritual issue for Arabs and Muslims » (Informed Comment, August 9, 2022): click here!
It seemed that it was all but a done deal: Israel was finally managing to bend the Arabs to its will, and Palestine was becoming a marginal issue that no longer defined Israel’s relations with its neighbours. Indeed, normalisation with Israel was, well, normal, and the Arabs, it seemed, had finally been tamed. Not. So. Fast. Many events demonstrate the opposite.
